Inside Asian Gaming will reveal the 2019 Asian Power 50 at a black-tie gala dinner in the opulent JW Marriott, Galaxy Macau on 1stNovember 2019. The countdown is currently well and truly on, with just one month left until Inside Asian Gaming discloses their Power 50 list of the most influential people in the Asian gaming marketplace.
What began in 2008 as an innovative way to appreciate the people who make the gaming sector a whole-hearted success, has developed into a hugely anticipated annual insight into the key players who continue to shape the landscape of Asian gaming.
The race is on to see whether Las Vegas Sands Chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson will continue to hold onto top position for an incredible seventh year in a row or if Galaxy Entertainment Group Team Vice-Chairman Francis Lui can go back to number one for the very first time since 2012.
Fascinatingly, only four men have held the top spot since IAG first named the Asian Gaming Power 50 in 2008, with Genting Party employer KT Lim the only one of those to do so without running a casino venture in Macau. Over the last eleven years, the prestigious number one position has gone to the following:
2008: Dr Stanley Ho
2009: Tan Sri KT Lim
2010: Mr Sheldon Adelson
2011 and 2012: Mr Francis Lui
2013 to 2018: Mr Sheldon Adelson
Can Adelson bag top spot again this year or has the constant advance of Galaxy put Lui back into contention? Or could we perhaps see a surprise contender in Melco accommodations Chairman and CEO Lawrence Ho, whose firm has significantly increased its functions into Cyprus and Australia over the past year?
Dragon CEO Paul Moynan said, “of all the events associated with the gaming industry this is one of the most important. Being acknowledged as being in the top 50 in your field is a phenomenal accomplishment, particularly in light of the continued rise in both the quantity and quality of Integrated Resorts, casinos and other gaming operations. On behalf of myself and the whole team at Dragon, I want to wish all nominees the very best of luck and can’t wait to see who comes top this year.”
An elite group of judges including regulators, legislators and industry experts consider the list ahead of the event with the help of a comprehensive mathematical formula. Factors such as the scale of each candidate's firm, their operations and expansion work within the last 12 months along with the "true" electric power each candidate has in the day-to-day procedures of the business they stand for. The "Big 50" listing is then scrutinised and debated at length between the nine members of the judging board.
The Gala Evening meal on 1st November is when the "Big 50" is revealed while guests enjoy excellent dining, energetic entertainment and the company of many friends, sector peers and influencers. The names on the list will be declared in a variety of exciting ways by famous VIPs and administration officials throughout the whole evening. They include Professor Davis Fong, Director of the Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming at the University of Macau and member of Macau's Legislative Assembly; David Green, former gaming regulator with the Independent Gambling Authority in South Australia and CEO at Newpage Consulting; Constance Hsu, Group Chief Operating Officer of Jin Bei Group and former President of Mocha Clubs; Professor Desmond Lam, Professor in Integrated Resort and Tourism Management at the University of Macau; Rui Pinto Proença, Corporate and Gaming Practice Partner at MdME Lawyers; and Michael Zhu, Senior Vice President of International Operations Planning and Analysis for The Innovation Group.
